LITH PRINTING WORKSHOP Instructor: Francesca di Leo Dates: May 2nd, 16th, 23rd, & June 6th 2010 Time: Sundays 11am-3:00pm (14hrs total) Workshop Fee: $225 + $160 lab fee Enrollment Limit: 10 Location: Translight Photography Center
Lith printing is a process that uses a lithographic two part developer in a very dilute solution to obtain color and texture from a black and white paper. Different papers have different qualities in Lith printing, ranging in color from warm sepias to salmon and even olive tones. Other papers have very little color shift, achieving beautiful textures instead, giving the print a texturally graphic quality.
In this four week workshop, students will explore the world of Lith printing and a whole new way to express themselves artistically. Attendees will learn how to “expose for the highlights and develop for the shadows”, which is the basic principle in Lith printing. All students who attend this class should have a basic knowledge of traditional black in white printing.

Black-and-white images produced in the darkroom are back in style in
the fine art market, offering a dramatic option in a largely digital
field. This creative course explores alternative processes that include
the use of toy cameras, toning, and experimentation in printing
techniques. Students can work with previous images or shoot new ones to
complete assignments. Lessons include developing black-and-white prints
using long-lasting and fade-resistant techniques with 35mm and medium
and large formats. Discussion includes how graphics applications (such
as Adobe Photoshop) can give photos a vintage look, film choices,
archival processes, creative aspects of black-and-white darkroom
controls, and darkroom safety. The course concludes with a student show
in the 1010 Westwood Center gallery. Prerequisite: X 439.1 Beginning Workshop in Photography and Darkroom Techniques or equivalent; basic darkroom experience. Enrollment limited to 12 students. Students
